2001 Workshop ISSUES IN UNIFICATION OF AGNs
Elba Island (Italy), May 21-24, 2001

You are welcome to attend, and we look forward to see you in Elba. The total number of participants is now around 85, substantially in excess of our initial plans due to a strong pressure from the AGN community. You may find the list of participants at the site http://www.arcetri.astro.it/~elba01/participants.html
A third circular with detailed logistic information, including point of contact for hotel booking, transportation, etc. will be mailed to the entries in that list in late February. In the meantime, note that if there is sufficient interest we plan to organize a bus service from and to Pisa. Indicatively, on Sunday May 20 the bus(es) should leave Pisa Railway Station at 14.45, and Pisa Airport at 15.00. On Friday May 25 the bus(es) should arrive in Pisa at around 12.00.

We have also prepared a preliminary scientific program, which can be viewed at http://www.arcetri.astro.it/~elba01/preliminary.html

Many of those who proposed a contribution have been included. If you asked to talk, and did not receive a ``Sorry, but ...'' message, then you should find your name in the program. Small adjustments are still possible, of course, and the information will be updated in real time.

Thank you again for your enthusiasm,
Marco Salvati

"INFRARED AND SUBMILLIMETER SPACE ASTRONOMY"
An International Conference to Honor the Memory of Guy Serra, June 11-12-13, 2001 "Centre des Congres", Toulouse, France

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Colleague,

We cordially invite you to a conference held in Toulouse (France) to honor the memory of Guy Serra.

Guy Serra died prematurely on August 15th 2000. He was one of the most active pioneer in the field of infrared and submillimeter space astronomy. After a PhD thesis on gamma ray astrophysics in 1973, he was among the very first to measure the far-infrared dust emission from our Galaxy with the AGLAE balloon-borne experiment. He then devoted his whole career to contribute in a decisive manner to the emergence and achievment of the infrared and submillimeter space program at the French and European levels with the AROME and PRONAOS balloon borne experiments, and with the satellite missions: ISO, ODIN, Planck and FIRST. Guy Serra was both a great scientist and a great humanist. Director of research at CNRS, his sudden departure leaves a tremendous empty space.

With the coming launches of SIRTF, Planck and FIRST, the infrared and submillimeter astronomy now enters in its golden age. The conference "INFRARED AND SUBMILLIMETER SPACE ASTRONOMY", dedicated to Guy Serra, will consider both the scientific and instrumental aspects and cover the following topics:
1. Dust and gas properties
2. Structure of the ISM and star formation
3. Extragalactic science
4. Future missions

Besides invited talks, half of the program will be dedicated to contributed talks presenting new results in the field. For more details on the program and the organisation of the conference, please refer to our Web site at http://www.cesr.fr/~moly/DSTUF/colloque_uf/index.html We sincerely hope that you will consider coming to Toulouse. If you are interested, please return the pre-registration form below by e-mail to gs2001@cesr.fr; further information will then be sent to you. May we also ask you to bring this announcement to the attention of your colleagues.

Practical information
The conference fee will be of 152 Euros (1000 FF). This will include the abstract book, the lunch meals, the conference dinner and the proceedings.

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION : MARCH 15TH
DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS : APRIL 15TH

Lodging: The conference center is within the old city of Toulouse. We have done grouped bookings in several hotels which are at walking distance. The hotel list, with indicative prices ,will be available through our web pages.
The participants will have to arrange their accomodation in these hotels by themselves.

Balkan Meeting of Young Astronomers"
25 - 29 September 2000

The astronomers joined up at Belogradchik during the "Balkan Meeting of Young Astronomers" (25 - 29 September 2000) proposed to set up the astronomical group of the South-Eastern countries of Europe that will be affiliated to the European Astronomical Society.

One of the purposes of this group is to organize from time to time the Joint Regional Meetings dedicated to a special topic of common interest. Indeed, it is easier to bring together people from a small area of Europe; they can attend such a meeting using the bilateral protocols and, the shorter the distances, the smaller the travel costs will be. Such a meeting could be organized as a seminar, offering everyone the opportunity to present his topic and to discuss it. The conclusion of such a meeting could be a common research project, to be submitted to the European Community for support.

The committee charged with the selection of the multilateral scientific projects is made up of Dr. Milcho Tsvetkov (Bulgaria), Prof. Dr. Mijat Mijatovic (FYR of Macedonia), Prof. Michael E. Contadakis (Greece), Dr. Boris Zhilyaev (Ukraine), Dr. Milan Dimitrijevic (Yugoslavia), and chaired by Dr. Magda Stavinschi (Romania, magda@roastro.astro.ro).

For a cycle of works on an explanation of Fraunhofer spectrum and solar atmosphere structure, he became the winner of the M.P.Barabashov award in the field of astronomy. Bohdan Babij was the author of more than 100 scientific works, wellknown popular writer and propagandist of astronomy, wonderful man and devoted friend. Now his followers continue the works started by him at the Lviv University.
The first conference in memory of Bogdan Babij "Solar atmosphere in Fraunhofer lines " was held in Lviv in 1996, second conference "Selected questions of astronomy and astrophysics " -- in 1998.

The theses and the program of a conference would be published before the beginning of the conference. The scientific organizing committee will recommend part of the reports for the publication in "Journal of Physical Studies" published by Lviv University. Official languages of a conference - Ukrainian, English.
The organizing committee asks you to inform about your intention to participate in conference till April 1 of 2001 by filling and sending the application (see appendix 1).
The abstracts should be arranged accordingly to an provided sample (see the appendix 2) and sent before the deadline May 1 of 2001.
